Although trades are not allowed to become official until next Tuesday when the new league year starts, Jay Glazer reported last night that the Washington Redskins and St. Louis Rams have come to terms on a trade involving the No. 2 overall pick. According to Glazer and subsequent updates,
the Redskins will exchange 2012 first round picks with the Rams and
then will also give up their first round picks in 2013 and 2014, as well
as some kind of second round pick.
That is quite the haul for the Rams. The Redskins had interest in Peyton Manning but he quickly let it be know he was looking elsewhere. Once that happened, the Redskins switched to plan B. I am not remotely surprised they unloaded such a huge cache of picks in this deal. While the football operations staff might have been handling negotiations, I have to think Dan Snyder made it very well known that price was no option. Snyder would seem to desperately want Robert Griffin III, and now he'll have a chance to get him. I head to DC in a few days and I can only imagine the commotion out there.
As for the Rams, they are in a position to do some serious re-building over the next few years. The Rams now have the sixth overall pick and there is a lot of talent available to them. And with two first round picks in each of the next two drafts, as well as two second round picks in one of those drafts, they could make some serious draft-day noise if they elect to move up. Or they can take the picks they have and try to do a good job bringing in some solid talent around which to build. The Rams have just become a very interesting team over the next few years.
